Shoulder Joint Anatomy Basics – Clinical Anatomy Revision – Dr Gill

Anatomy was probably my biggest challenges in medical school, the reason being it is one long list of lumps bumps and insertion points.

Essentially anatomy in this fashion to me is little more than just rote learning. Thankfully clinical anatomy makes much more sense to me. Looking at how a joint moves, why it is shaped as it is, how the tendons have evolved to insert in their particular locations, and crucially have a joint becomes injured and how it develops pathology

After having good feedback on our previous anatomy video, I’ve tried to take on board the comments

There are two additional videos supplement this:

Shoulder examination demonstration video,

Shoulder examination clinical deep dive explaining what it is it is being looked for each step of the examination

The rotator cuff muscles are perhaps the most important members of the muscles of the shoulder joint, and are essential to the healthy functioning of the glenohumeral joint. They are a set of four muscles that run from the scapula to the humerus. This group of muscles may also be referred to as the SITS muscles: the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis.

Many other muscles act upon the glenohumeral joint. Here are some examples, arranged by order of their associated function:

Flexion – Pectoralis major, deltoid (Prime movers), Coracobrachialis, biceps brachii (Accessory muscles)

Extension- Deltoid (Prime mover), Teres major, latissimus dorsi , long head of biceps brachii (Accessory muscles)

Abduction- Deltoid (Prime mover), Supraspinatus (Accessory muscles)

Adduction- Pectoralis major, latissimius dorsi (Prime movers), Teres major, long head of triceps brachii (Accessory muscles)

Medial Rotation- Subscapularis (Prime mover), Pectoralis major, deltoid, latissimus dorsi, teres major (Accessory muscles)

Lateral Rotation- Infraspinatus (Prime mover), Teres major, deltoid (Accessory muscles)

Functional orthopaedic anatomy for students. On rotation, faculty and residents will expect you to know your anatomy, even though you crammed everything into a short timespan and did a data dump onto an exam and then moved on. As far as surgeons are concerned, whereas students don’t need to know everything about surgery, knowledge of anatomy is an expectation. So you need to review the basics, correlate it with your physical examination, and be able to not get lost in a surgical procedure.

Large shoulder muscles

Watch out for me saying “clavicle” when I should say “scapula”. It’s a slip of the tongue I have.

Having a look at the larger muscles of the shoulder region, and talking about where they are and what they do (while trying not to spend too much time talking about inervation or detailed attachment sites).

How To Journal To Relieve Chronic Pain

pain No Comments »

This is not a “break out your multicoloured fountain pens and the expensive journal Nana bought from Indigo for Christmas” kind of journaling. Oh no!

This journaling style is messy and meant to be a safe place where you can be brutally honest, give yourself a voice to be seen, heard and validated, be one sided, win every argument you’ve ever had, swear, shout it out in all caps on the page and allow anything occupying space in your mind and in your body, that is a source of stress, to be actively released through the action of writing or typing it out.

I have found this style of journaling to be very healing and I know when I practice it, it helps me find relief with the chronic aches and pains in my physical body and provides me with a sense of overall relief.

Chronic Pain Journaling | This chronic pain writing technique changed my life.
Late in my chronic back pain journey, I stumbled upon a chronic pain journaling technique that would later change my life and the way I looked at and experienced pain. I was hesitant at first to use this chronic pain journaling technique simply because I am not one to write about my feelings or do any kind of journaling for that matter.

As I dove deeper and deeper into the world of our brains and pain I realized that this journaling technique was way deeper than just writing about how I felt. It was going to be one of the most life-changing habits I would create.
